Media Release - WSCP nominates GDX for national Business Safety Ambassador Award
Posted on: 18-September-2007
(September 18, 2007 – Welland, ON) – The Welland Safe Community Partnership is pleased to announce that they have submitted nomination paperwork to the national Safe Communities Foundation to recognize GDX for their exemplary safety record and the proactive measures they have taken in ensuring the safety of their employees.
“We are extremely proud of what our local GDX plant has accomplished with respect to their safety record,” explains Bill Auchterlonie, Chair, Welland Safe Community Partnership. “We’ve nominated them for the national award, because we feel they should be held up as an example to all workplaces across Canada.”
In 2005, GDX Automotive in Welland won the prestigious Chairman’s Award for EHS Safety. The Welland facility had the lowest recordable injury rate of GDX plants worldwide. The performance was based on an 83% reduction in workplace injuries in the previous three years. GDX Welland had the lowest lost time injury rate of all GDX plants with a reduction of 93% in the previous three years. This is the second lowest severity rate in the company.
Since then, that astounding record has been improved, consistently – so that claims in 2007 are now 1/3 of what they were in 2000 – and lost days have fallen to 3% of what they once were.
Since the formation of the Welland Safe Community Partnership, GDX has hosted several tours of the plant to demonstrate the changes they have made in order to achieve the remarkable success observed in the past few years.
GDX has been a strong supporter of the Welland Safe Community Partnership – both through invitations to share their success stories with the community – and through participation in public events to promote the Welland Safe Community Partnership. They have also opened their doors to other business and manufacturers in Welland to share their experience and success.
Bill Auchterlonie explains, “Representatives from GDX will be recognized at the Tuesday, October 2, 2007, Welland City Council meeting with an award from the Welland Safe Community Partnership, and we hope to present them with the national award at the same time.”
The presentation of the award will coincide with national Safe Communities Canada Day, which takes place on Wednesday, October 3, 2007.
