Media Release - Welland’s Safe Communities initiative seeks Chair

Posted on: 23-August-2007

(February 26, 2004 – Welland, ON) – Now that representatives from a diverse group of organizations have had a chance to get familiar with the Safe Communities initiative, they have asked Mayor Damian Goulbourne to find them a Chair for their Steering Committee.

In December 2003, Mayor Goulbourne invited Shirley Hickman, Western Ontario Regional Coordinator of the Safe Communities Foundation to City Hall to introduce the program to a number of community stakeholders.

Since then, there has been an overwhelming interest from the stakeholders, and they have decided to move forward to form a steering committee, along with several sub-committees.

“We’re looking for someone who has a desire to lead this initiative for the next two years,” said Mayor Goulbourne. “The stakeholders that we’ve been meeting with would like to see a member of the community step into this role; someone who has a real interest in making Welland a safer place to live, work and play.”

According the Guide Book, created by the Safe Communities Foundation, the ideal candidate for Chair of the steering committee is “credible and visible in the community and has connections to numerous other community agencies; proficient at leading others; an organized and effective time manager”.

Once the steering committee is in place, and they have outlined some priorities to focus on, they will be putting a call out to the community for citizen involvement on the various sub-committees.

If you would like to put forward a name to Chair the committee, please send the name, contact information and what makes the person a good candidate to Mayor Goulbourne by Friday, March 5, 2004. The information can be sent by e-mail: or by fax: 905-735-6588. You may also drop off the information at City Hall.
