Media Release - Welland Safe Community Partnership “drawing” kids to safety

Posted on: 23-August-2007

(April 1, 2005 – Welland, ON) – With the help of Elmer the Safety Elephant, Sparky the Fire Dog and Andy the Ambulance, the Welland Safe Community Partnership (WSCP) launched its Kids’ Art Contest at the Seaway Mall today.

“The Welland Safe Community Partnership is about promoting a culture of safety for all of Welland’s residents, no matter what their age,” said Pat Chiocchio, Chair. “This Kids’ Art Contest is a fun way to get our children thinking about safety in everything they do. And, best of all, they have the chance to win great prizes for their entries.”

The art contest is sponsored by the Seaway Mall. Blank contest forms can be picked up and completed drawings can be dropped off at the customer service desk. All of the drawings will be displayed on the wall across from the mall’s customer service desk until June 1, 2005, when the contest closes.

Rick Demers is very happy to see the Seaway Mall take an active role in the promotion of the Kids’ Art Contest. “It’s fantastic that the mall puts so much effort each year into supporting community initiatives like this one,” he said. “And for them to also provide the bicycles as prizes for each age group really goes above and beyond what we had hoped for.”

The age groups for the contest are up to 4 years; 5 to 7 years; 8 to 10 years; and 11 to 13 years. The winning entry from each age group will win a bicycle and a helmet. The helmets are being provided by the United Way of South Niagara.

The art contest opened today and will close on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. The winners will be announced at the WSCP Community Launch on Sunday, June 5 at the Children’s Safety Village. The community launch event will be a fun opportunity for the residents of Welland and their families to celebrate Welland’s designation as a safe community.
