Media Release - City congratulates Welland Safe Community Partnership

(March 1, 2005 – Welland, ON) – The Welland Safe Community Partnership (WSCP) learned last week that they have been successful in achieving a safe community designation from the Safe Communities Foundation. Welland is the first community in Niagara to be designated.

Mayor Damian Goulbourne is extremely appreciative of the hard work that has gone into this initiative. “It’s wonderful to see so many community stakeholders come together to achieve a goal. The chair, vice chair and all of the volunteers have done a wonderful job of getting us this far, and I hope to see more involvement from the community as we progress.”

The designation of Welland as a Safe Community fits well with the City’s recently-adopted Community Economic Development Strategy. A community-wide safety initiative demonstrates a concern for the quality of life of residents, and allows everyone to work together to achieve a goal.

In addition, the Safe Community designation is an attractive benefit for businesses looking to move to Welland, as there are programs that can be taken advantage of through WSIB that a non-designated community does not have access to.

Pat Chiocchio, Ward 1 Councillor and Chair of the WSCP, said, “This designation is a great step forward for the City of Welland. With this designation, the Welland Safe Community Partnership will be able to implement a number of programs for our citizens that don’t fall within the City’s scope.”

The Welland Safe Community Partnership anticipates holding their official launch during the week of May 30 to June 5, in conjunction with Safe Kids Week.
